SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂) that selectively binds cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is utilized in in vitro biochemical research to investigate cardiolipin–cytochrome c interactions, mitochondrial cristae architecture, reactive oxygen species attenuation, and electron transport chain efficiency.
